On August 26th, 56 year old Tatiana was raped by a Russian soldier in her village in the Kherson region. She begged the soldier that she was too old, then sobbed as he forced himself on her. Months later, she is still haunted by the shame. Her village has been liberated by Ukrainian forces but life stopped for Tatiana on August 26th. This was one of the more painful interviews I have done. And Tatiana’s story is one that dozens of women in Russian occupied territories have experienced. We spent the day with a team of investigators dispatched from Kyiv to investigate sexual assaults. In two weeks in Kherson, they recorded six allegations of rape. Many more, they said, go unreported.
